During the World War II, resources were hard to come by and Governments ran big recycling campaigns to make sure that as little as possible was wasted. Here are a few examples of what was recycled and for what reason…

- Tins and metal were recycled for use in aircraft, tanks and weapons.

- Left over food provided feed for pigs, chickens and goats.

- Rubber was collected to make new tires.

People were also encouraged to mend belongings as opposed to just buying new ones. Campaigns like ‘Make Do And Mend’ and ‘Sew And Save’ gave advice on how to recycle textiles and patch up their worn out clothes. Knitting also became very popular around this time.

Families had to plan meals carefully so as to minimize wastage. With no fridges or freezers, perishable food had to be purchased in small quantities and meals were made with some interesting substitutes. Meat fat was saved to make pastry, and the cream from milk was stored in a jar and shaken to make butter and buttermilk.

It is a shame that it took people such a long time to acknowledge the importance of recycling, and also that it required such unfortunate circumstances to bring it to our attention. These days, we know the importance of recycling to preserve the Earth’s resources, save money, reduce pollution and help combat climate change.

Even so, we are still failing to recycle a lot of items that are recyclable. Though we know what we need to be doing, and though it has been made easier for us to do it, there is still a very relaxed attitude to recycling. Too many people simply cannot be bothered to recycle, and that is undoing the good work being done by those who do take the little time and effort required to recycle.

If they could do it, then why can’t we recycle too? We should all be taking action now, and not be waiting for a major crisis to kick-start us into action again.

Ware 4 Recycling Bins Ltd have been promoting cost effective recycling bins, trolleys and waste containers for over 5 years.

We all have an idea that our water and energy do not have an unlimited supply. You can help save the energy by following the tips on changing your rentals into eco friendly homes. Most of these projects you will be able to do yourself, some cost more money than others. Just remember you are doing this for our environment.

The first step is determining how old your windows are in your home. If they are very old, they will need replacing with double glazed windows, which are energy efficient. They keep the heat and the air conditioning in the home. This can be costly, but think about all the money in electricity you will be saving by installing these kind of windows.

The next fix would be to add insulation to your attic space. There are two ways to achieve this, the first is the type of insulation that you blow into the space. The second type comes in a roll, as you unroll it is sixteen inches wide, you cut and place this between the two inch by four inch planks in the wall. There is an R value printed on each package, make sure you have at least an 18 R value or higher. Then cover with drywall board.

Let us talk about solar panels. Solar panels were invented to not only save energy, but make energy for your home usage. It literally turns the suns powerful rays into energy to run your appliances and lights. These sit on the roof and store energy during the day. This is one of the best things you can do for your home, and will eventually pay for itself.

When you think about all the appliances you currently have in your home, they are probably not energy efficient. You can potentially save as much as 40 percent of electricity to run your new upgraded appliances. If you choose to purchase those now, you should include a washer and dryer, dishwasher and refrigerator. You may want to replace your hot water heater as well.

The least expensive thing you can do is replacing regular light bulbs with energy saving bulbs. Place these in every light socket you have, being careful to use the correct watts for each one. These not only save energy but they also last a very long time. You no longer will be replacing regular bulbs every month, which means less money you will be spending on bulbs.

Let us talk about saving your water by doing simple things like turning the water off while brushing your teeth. Purchasing a low water toilet tank. Take short showers every day. Easy ways to save on your electric bill would be turning off lights if you are leaving the room or the house. Unplugging the toaster or blender because when they are plugged in they are still using electricity. When possible, use a toaster oven rather than your large oven.

If you are not sure about doing each upgrade, start off with changing the light bulbs. Then buy the energy saving appliances. Take each step as you can afford it, and before you know it your whole house will be eco friendly. For those who are a bit unsure ask the professionals and get their opinions on things like the solar panels.

There are things that we can do to preserve our environment. Check out our guide on how to make your properties into eco friendly homes as we’ve got the ultimate inside info on green building materials including roof supplies .

Thankfully, paper is not a difficult material to recycle, and there are excellent benefits for the environment when the procedure is completed. Once it has been collected (by either your local authority or a recycling company acting on their behalf), it is taken to a paper mill, who take care of the rest of the recycling process.

The first thing that happens at the paper mill is the turning of the scrap paper into pulp. Having been turned into pulp, it is then cleaned and de-inked. The final stage of the paper recycling process is for the pulp to be turned back into rolls of paper, which can then be used for newspapers, toilet rolls, etc.

So, now that you know how simple the recycling process for paper is, lets look at benefits that it brings…

Saves Trees - The less brand new (referred to as ‘virgin’) paper that is needed, the less trees have to be cut down. Vast areas have already been ruined as a direct of deforesting for paper, and this needs to stop as by doing so we are unbalancing eco-systems and the atmosphere.

Wildlife Preservation - More often than not, the wildlife that lives in the trees that are cut down to make ‘new’ paper, die quickly because they cannot adapt to living anywhere else. Recycling paper means that they can die natural deaths instead of forced ones.

Saves Space - Recycling paper reduces space in landfills. 1 ton of recycled paper made from scraps can save 3 cubic yards.

Less Pollution - Burning paper in waste incinerators pumps masses of pollution into the air. That means that we are unnecessarily causing the air that we all breathe to be of a lower quality.

Creates Jobs - Recycling paper is good for communities. Someone has to actually do all that recycling which means more jobs are created. With the global recession in full swing this is a welcome side effect of recycling paper.

Sets A Precedent - Paper is probably the easiest thing to recycle, so it is a good starting point for those who do not currently recycle at all. Having gotten into the habit of recycling paper, and seeing that it really is not difficult, people are more likely to start recycling other items too.

Cheaper Paper - Recycled paper is often cheap to purchase. Buying cheaper, recycled goods encourages more recycled goods to be manufactured, sustaining the recycling industry.

LEED, an abbreviation for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a non-compulsory program which allows a building to achieve recognition as a “green” structure. To do so, it must manage its resources in a way that is friendly to the environment. The program began in 1998, and since then almost fifteen thousand buildings have been so recognized. Current predictions are that 10 percent or more new construction projects in 2010 will seek to be certified.

Categories of certification, from lowest to highest, are Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Each designation requires earning more points as the levels increase. To earn points, items in different areas must be met. These areas are innovation and design, indoor environment, water efficiency, materials and resources, energy and atmosphere, and sustainable sites.

In the category of sustainable sites, points are awarded for the protection of the habitat, light pollution, and how well open space is utilized. This area also includes alternative transportation, and features such elements as bicycle storage and the use of low emission vehicles. Access to the public transportation system is also in this classification. The handling of storm water and sufficient parking arrangements are in this category as well.

As the name implies, water efficiency measures how efficiently a building uses water. Landscaping and waste water are two of the items included. Energy and atmosphere addresses such issues as the control of refrigerants, the use of wind or solar power, and overall efficiency in energy use. Materials and resources focuses on whether any materials used are from recycled sources, including existing roofs or walls. Waste while construction is under way is also rated.

There are prerequisites that must be met in the category of indoor environment. These are the control of tobacco smoke and meeting minimum air quality requirements. Then, evaluations are based on the monitoring of outside air admitted, and the quality of the ventilation. Materials used, like paints and glues, must be those types classified as low fume. Employee comfort is also rated, with points for daylight, temperature, and views.

Innovation in design applies to the architecture and engineering of the structure. It is applied based on how the building controls its usage of fossil fuels, its emission of greenhouse gases, and what its carbon footprint is. Additional points can be earned in this category if the designer is accredited by LEED.

Each type of structure has its own criteria. Complete neighborhoods can apply, as can existing commercial structures which are being renovated. Other types included schools, homes, commercial construction, and retail construction.

It is not at all compulsory to seek LEED certification. Should a building owner wish to do so, he submits an application which details why the structure is eligible. This requires the payment of a fee for the registration and for the certification.

Having a LEED certification will be a great way to expand your opportunities in fields related to the environment. It’s easy to learn more about the steps you can take to begin achieving your LEED goals today!

People need to seriously consider alternative energy such as solar panels for homes. The world is facing a serious crisis in regards to energy. Solar energy is popular and the most talked about, cost effective alternative. Solar panels can be installed on a new or older home.

There are methods and diagrams showing one how to make your own solar panels. This is a much cheaper method and by using solar energy you are effectively helping to lower the worlds energy needs. There will never be a shortage of solar energy (also known as renewable energy) as the sun always shines.

Solar energy will create lighting within and without the home as well as warm the swimming pool and heat your water. It will allow pone to cook during the day as solar energy is converted into thermal energy and does not pollute the air or give off green house gasses like fossil fuels do.

If you install solar panels you are guaranteed to have a continuous supply of electricity even when there are power failures. This type of energy is not governed or controlled by any syndicates. In addition, solar energy is eco-friendly. One does not have to worry about power surges as there are now computers and many other devices and gadgets obtainable that run on solar energy.

Solar panels will save a homeowner an incredible amount and will also alleviate the dependency on gas as well as electricity generated from dirtier methods. Solar panels contain battery cells which will store excess energy for later usage. Usually these solar panels are placed on the roof of your home.

Solar panels for houses are widely available at specific outlets. For more information you can go online and browse through the many options available. Solar panels will also increase the value of your home. They provide a wonderful place to start to make a difference in the world we live in.

The solar panels price is becoming more affordable, and solar panel efficiency is continually improving! It’s time to go solar powered! Don’t reprint this exact article.

We all strive for holistic health. Being sick all the time, while common in this day and age, is horribly inefficient, and a huge inconvenience to our coworkers and family, as well as a strain on our health care system. Even something as small as a headache or stomach cramps can throw a wrench in our routines. This is why you’re reading this right now, because you want to be free of health related nuisances. A holistic approach could be the answer, as it protects you from medicine related side effects, as well as keeping your mind, spirit and emotions in check as well.

While looking at health in this new light, many people are practicing preventative healthcare. But when we do get sick, there are other options than traditional modern medicine. Some of the alternative healing methods people are rediscovering include aromatherapy, massage, herbal medicine and acupuncture.

Alternative means a choice, so having alternative medical options means you can choose between many different treatment options. Some are unconventional, and if all you are used to is big pharma medicine and techniques, might even seem downright unusual. You have the choice to try the oldest, still in use option: TCM or traditional Chinese medicine, which is mostly made up of eating plants and herbs. Yoga and meditation, products of India which promote serenity and energy flow, massage or even aromatherapy.

Because of the rising negative perception regarding conventional medicine, it continues to lose the trust of the public pushing it spiraling down and losing its share of the market. One of the common complaints is its focus on limiting the treatment on the specific ailing body part only with utter disregard to the cause behind the ailment.

The common process in western medicine is to fix the current problem now and worry about the rest of the body later. This is the opposite of holistic medicine practitioners. They will usually say the body is a whole, not just a bunch of parts. So in treating a specific ailment they will always think about the whole bodies health first, and then figure out a way to cure the specific ailment. The reason for this is that when the whole person is at ease, the specific ailment will heal easier.

Due to the growing understanding of holistic healing methods, its popularity is skyrocketing in the US and abroad. Taking advantage of the drawbacks and negative feelings toward conventional medicine. In the last 2 years alone, the herbal medicine market grew 200% in just 2 years time. However, always be careful when trying any new medical treatments. Even with its growing popularity due to the increasing number of people who swear by herbal remedies, there are still some things to keep in mind regarding its use and its ability to deliver the desired effects to an individual.

Even if alternative medicine is naturally occurring, it can be dangerous if misused or abused in certain ways. Despite a lack of FDA labeling and dosage restrictions, they shouldn’t be taken in excess nor with other prescription drugs unless approved by your doctor. Combining it with alcohol is also to be avoided.

Another natural healing method that is being used more and more in the western world is acupuncture. This ancient method from the far east is accomplished by the insertion of tiny needles in the skin at strategic points. Doing this stimulates nerve centers in your body which is believed to help with certain healing processes.

Its easy to get excited at the possibilities that natural healing can offer us, but like all things it pays to make yourself as informed on the subject as you can. Luckily there are a large number of websites where you can further your education. So learn as much as you can now, your body will thank you in the future.

Want to be save some money and be ecologically friendly at the same time? There is a new form of energy out there just waiting to be discovered by the general public. Magnetic power create by a magnetic energy generator might be the next great thing!

A magnetic generator uses the power of magnets to create energy and perpetual motion. It harnesses the attraction and the repulsion properties common to magnets to produce free energy that can be used for free. Yes, I said free! It also does not need a certain type of weather to create its energy unlike solar or wind power.

Like any new technology, there are plenty of negative comments floating around the Internet concerning magnetic power. Could be just jealousy! Could be companies that produce other types of energy just attempting to protect their interests. If magnetic energy became widespread, it will financially damage these companies.

Magnetic power is cheap power. In fact, it is basically free power! It does not generate any harmful gases or emissions that will harm the environment. It doesn’t create noise or heat. They can be used in most places as they are quite small. They would most likely require very little maintenance.

There is plenty of information found on the Internet about how to build your own magnetic motor. You can buy kits that will give you detailed instructions for around fifty dollars. There are also several videos that show you how to create your own power source. A magnetic electricity generator should be able to create enough energy to supply your entire house.

You can supply your home with electricity for free. Isn’t that incentive enough to learn more about a magnetic energy generator? You will get a return on your investment in a very short time.

Have you been thinking about finding ways to save on energy costs? Want to save money and help the environment? Who doesn’t! A magnetic energy generator might be the answer for you.
Many people grumble over expensive energy expenses, frequently paying out significant amounts each month. Utility services don't come very affordably in the new age of increasing fuel prices.

Various people grumble about high priced power bills, regularly having to pay significant amounts monthly. Utility providers do not come at a low cost during the new day of escalating gas charges.

Nevertheless, instead of merely complaining about this ugly circumstance, it is better to adopt a more measured strategy. There are easy, affordable alternatives the majority of us have available to decrease our utility bills and make best use of the resources in our very own houses.

One commonly overlooked though effective means of reaching the objective of decreasing utility payments is to look at your toilet. You got that right - the embarrassing bowl that is parked, hidden among our other house “appliances.” This apparatus may well in reality be wasting your water along with every last flushing stroke.

If that is happening, you’re best to invest in a brand new model that is more effective using water. Subsequently, you will no longer be wasting precious water along with your hard earned dollars basically going down the drain.

Installing an Energy Efficient Toilet

It’s a common practice for many people to set a brick in their toilet tank to save water. This is a bad idea. It’s a practice which could actually corrode the tank and ruin toilet plumbing through tiny bits of the brick breaking off and then traveling where they aren’t meant.

So what are your options?

There are numerous toilet models out there. A few are aesthetically pleasing (although bear in mind this IS simply a toilet). Other designs are awfully pricey and border on the high-end. If your objective is lowering costs, you don’t want these.

Interestingly, commode water preservation doesn’t always come with probably the most steep styles. You should hunt for publicized capabilities that actually diminish water use.

In the course of your search, look for online assessments concerning whatever unit that draws your attention. Find out whether or not the manufacturer is amid those earning a reputation for energy and water conservation.

Evaluate Contemporary “Toilet Technology”

Scan through toilet descriptions that suggest effectiveness in the usage of the water. Contact a salesperson knowledgeable about diverse toilet options and lean on their competence.

In the US, federal law mandates distributors to sell power preserving accessories and additional supplies that are environmentally friendly, so look for vendors which sell such designs.

In our day, to economize water and be more cost-effective with your toilet model, you will want one that only uses 1.6 gallons of water for each flush while still packing plenty of ooomph with each flush that simply one flush is required per bathroom visit.

In addition there are toilet choices which provide a couple of choices for flushing - one for liquid waste plus the other for solid. This design lets you adapt the amount of water based on exactly what needs to be delivered through the plumbing. It is just a terrific idea.

Conclusion

Replace your existing toilet products with those which are water effective. By doing this you’ll preserve additional water and efficiently decrease your monthly utility bills.

New research on the life expectancy of this new kind of renewable energy has helped decrease the cost of solar panels. It was once estimated that solar panels would last only about 20 years, but it has now been proven that models can last up to 30 years. This makes it a more appealing investment for homeowners who were hesitant because of the short life expectancy.

Environmentally friendly institutes are even going as far as cheering on institutions of finance to make available the funding for purchasing and installing solar panels. Homeowners should have the option of installing this renewable energy because in a few years time they will eventually pay themselves off.

Across Europe, and even China, governments have been giving financial incentives for those private citizens who upgrade to solar energy. This, of course, has decreased the cost of solar panels and increased demand. India and the United States have incentive plans in the works but have yet to release and implement them.

This type of renewable energy usually pays for itself, as mentioned above, because the main costs are actually buying the panels and installation. After that, you do not have to pay for your energy source, unlike regular electricity.

The renewable energy industry, the solar energy field in particular, has very enthusiastic goals. These goals include making solar energy as cheap as the electricity we use today. The aim is to make Europe at least half dependent on solar energy as opposed to electricity grids by 2020.

All of this activity in the solar panel industry will reduce the cost of solar panels for the consumer market. This industry will likely boom in the coming years giving companies more profit and more flexibility in reducing costs.

The cost of solar panel hardware is going down, so it is possible to get a cheap solar panel. Start using solar generated energy today! This and other unique content ” articles are available with free reprint rights.

Greenhouses have been used in the past as a medium for hobbyists for their garden greenhouses but commercial greenhouses are becoming more and more prevalent as the world becomes more "green conscious" and energy efficient.

Greenhouses have been used in the past as a medium for hobbyists for their garden greenhouses but commercial greenhouses are becoming more and more prevalent as the world becomes more “green conscious” and energy efficient.

To explain, many universities naturally have their commercial greenhouses, for their agricultural studies. However, many elementary and pre-schools are also building greenhouses as this is a key factor in raising the generations to come. Not only are the children learning about growing and life, but they are also learning about our earth, importance of organic growing, eating habits and self worth.

As our land and our soil become more and more obsolete, another good reason to build a greenhouse is to plant a garden using hydroponics. Hydroponics is used to grow without the use of soil but something more available that can transport nutrients to the roots of the plants.

Lately, there has been some information out about building acreage vertical instead of horizontal which is termed “eco building”. It is the concept of building large high rises or using unused office buildings built in glass to house plantations and generate crops. This would allow cities and countries to grow a wide range of vegetation in places where there were no spaces, or available land. It would also allow crops to grow in countries where at one time they had to ship crops in from other countries. This would allow gaining more economical standards for some countries who at one time could not grow a particular crop, example, tomatoes. Such is true for some of the nations poor populations. If we can supply healthy food through greenhouse growing for those who normally have climates that don’t allow healthy growth, we could feed a nation by building these greenhouse structures up.

The other day I was reading an article regarding the desire to create better food products by farming with organic fertilizers. This can be accomplished by attracting insects with particular plants that kill other insects that bring disease to the crop or plants. This quickly brought to mind how the generations throughout my life have always had a wave of “naturalists” that always wanted to get back to nature. Like myself, I have wonderful intentions. Now, it is time to do something about it.

We are all learning so much about the earth, the economy and about green sustainable living. Greenhouse plantations would conquer a lot of these issues very quickly. Building greenhouses could be the answer.
